Americans are moving once again to the region called the Sun Belt, including locations like Atlanta, Tampa, Dallas, Phoenix, and even Las Vegas. Large cities in the nation, like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., are seeing their overall population growth slow down. (This is occurring even though they are attracting more immigrants than smaller towns and cities.)
Experts believe that this trend is occurring, in part, at least, thanks to more employment opportunities in the Sun Belt. Cities there, which took a serious hit from the recession and mortgage crisis, were among the fastest-growing in the U.S. in 2015.
Overall rates of people moving from one section of the country to another remains lower compared to pre-recession levels, but Americans are moving at higher rates in several regions. This is a big change from even two years ago.
Millennials and their new families are helping to add to the boost in the suburban areas, while the growth in many urban areas is flattening as Millennials exit.
The fastest-growing metro areas, from 2013 to 2015, include:
- Houston, Dallas-Forth Worth, and Arlington, Texas
- Atlanta, Sandy Springs, and Roswell, Georgia
- Phoenix, Mesa, and Scottsdale, Arizona
